For your viewing pleasure, we have selected five dance music documentaries that show the history and developments in the music, genres, and the various communities, subcultures, and lifestyles. Enjoy it :)

1. Hang the DJ (1998 Documentary)

A classic DJ documentary. Filmmakers Marco and Mauro La Villa examine the role of disc jockeys in 1990s dance-club culture.

2. Better Living Through Circuitry (1998)

This DVD is a documentary film about the history of the U. S. rave scene, which includes a fantastic soundtrack.

3. This Ain’t Chicago: UK House According to the Artists That Lived It (Documentary)

This documentary puts the focus on how house music took hold in the UK in the late ’80s and early ’90s, according to Richard Sen and guests. Sen compiled a collection of tracks for Strut Records called This Ain’t Chicago, and this short documentary allows him to put those songs into context.

4. Maestro: The History of House Music & NYC Club Culture (2003 Documentary)

Maestro gives an incredible look into how pioneers like Larry Levan and his club The Paradise Garage would come to lay the foundations for all of dance music.

5. Pump Up the Volume

Pump Up the Volume is the consummate history of house music up until the mid-1990s. The series features legends like Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, Pete Tong, Jesse Saunders, Happy Mondays, and more, taking us from Chicago to London and beyond.
