Apple Lossless for Windows

I know this was brought up in older posts, but now that 5.0 is here, I'd get much more use out of it if it supported Apple Lossless. Most DJs, Windows djs included, need to integrate with Itunes. This is especially true for Ableton Users since it doesn't have a good collection/browsing system of it's own. Since Itunes won't support FLAC (yeah, I hate it, too), Apple Lossless is the best format for me since it incorporates tags and is lossless. This is not a Mac-users-only need. Thanks.

Will that is certainly strange, they're just .m4a files I would have expected them to work. We'll be looking into this, thanks for bringing it to our attention. Cheers, Chad P

Thanks, the fact that it should be in there makes me happy. I can send any documentation you want, including my VIP key. BTW, I haven't been able to find anything that shows exactly which formats the Windows version should support. Did I just miss it?

It's still a bit of a cluster.. ahem... still some file format support work to do. These things take a TON of testing to make sure we don't screw things up for DJ's libraries. The Windows version _should_ support: .MP3 .MP4 .M4A (excluding ALAC) .WAV .FLAC And the Mac version: .MP3 .MP4 .M4A (including ALAC) .WAV (tags now written and supported in Serato) .AIFF

Hi, I just bought the upgrade to v5 and missed that Apple lossless support doesn't exist on Windows - I really should pay more attention ;-) Can I also throw my weight behind the request for ALAC support on Windows please? I run Serato Itch and the only lossless format that it supports is Apple lossless. I suspect a lot of potential customers are also in the same predicament. If I can avoid having to setup a Hackintosh virtual machine to be able to use MIK, it would be a very, very good thing :-) Thanks, Simon

So Chad P, how's the research coming on ALAC in Windows? Any updates - figured out why it's not working, or found that it is working in some scenarios?

ALAC requires a specific file decoder. We're looking at a couple of different options. The easiest for us would be to direct you to a third part ALAC decoder that MIK can use, but it would be better for the end user if we can find one that we can package into MIK itself. Cheers, Chad P

That's great info. In order to start using it, I'd be happy to get the codec and install it as directed until an integrated version comes out. If there's a way to try, I'm happy to be the guinea pig.

Think we may be getting Apple Lossless support since Apple has now released the codec as open source freeware? It can't be that hard to plug something free into the program can it? I feel stupid having upgraded from 4 to 5 only to find the support I need is still not there.

I'm in exactly the same boat as traincrash. Loads of tracks lovingly encoded as FLAC, but of course Serato Itch doesn't support it. Mass converted everything to Apple Lossless only to find that Mixed in Key doesn't support that! In the end I had to convert everything back to FLAC (thank goodness it's all lossless), run them through MiK and then convert them back to ALAC to use in Serato! Of course in the process I lost all of the key tags so I'm relying on the keys in the comments for the time being. Official support for ALAC would be great, please! I'd try asking for FLAC support from Serato (which I'd prefer) but it's been a feature request there for a long time and they show no interest in supporting it unfortunately. At least you guys listen to your customers.

I just re-ripped my entire collection into ALAC and was gonna run the stragglers that hadn't been MiK'ed through only to find it doesn't support ALAC. This is definitely a must have for me now, so +1 on adding support. I don't really want to have to re-purchase MiK for Mac to run it on my less powerful MBP.

You should be able to work with ALAC files using the Windows version of MIK, but you do need to install a separate ALAC decoder, which you can download here: http://dsp-worx.de/?n=15

Please let us know how it goes.

This is fantastic news! I've been using the Mac version on my wife's laptop but I'd love to go back to my PC. Have sent a support request to convert back to the Windows version. Thanks. :)

Hi,

Please let me know how you get on with this, I'd love to move back to Windows and not have to depend on the Mac.

Thanks!

Have tested with just the one file so far but I can confirm that it works using the codec linked above and Windows 8. :)

I downloaded the latest version of MiK first, so if you have issues make sure you're up-to-date.

... And having now set it to work on my entire library I can confirm that it definitely works as expected. :)

Thanks Chad and co!

That's great! We'll have a built in codec in the 5.5 version, so it will be even easier - no third party codec required.

Cheers,
Chad P

Hi, I'm the orignal poster, and just installed the decoder. I am a v-e-r-y happy man today. It's already saving me a lot of time. One benefit of the challenge of working with ALAC files before this - I got pretty good with a pitch pipe at finding keys quickly!

Hey, I actually spoke too soon. I had a problem originally, which I thought had gone away, but which has returned. Whenever I load an apple lossles track into MIK, I get the error message "program cannot start because optimfrog.dll is not loaded in your computer". What's funny is it then proceeds to correctly analyze the ALAC track. Suggestions? I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I have found a downloadable codec for it but not sure which program is asking for it, or where I should install it.

I did a little searching, optimfrog.dll seems to be related in some way to working with lossless audio, but it's not something that is used in our software. If you are still able to process files, for now I would ignore it. MIK 5.5 which is due out soon will have it's own built in ALAC decoder, so I am hoping you won't see this error message once it is released.

Cheers,
Chad P

I just did a quick test and it's related to the TAGs. I cleared out all the TAG's (I use TAG Scanner) and then dropped the m4a files into MIK and it ran without the Optimfrog.dll error. the same files with tags and embedded cover art bring up the error, the files with tags but no embedded cover art also don't work

Ok, good to know. Could you please do me a favor and upload a few of the files that are showing an error to speedyshare.com, send the download link to contact@mixedinkey.com and I will take a look at it. Place all of the files in a .zip folder (multiple files, one .zip folder) to make it easier to upload and download. Also, please include the link to this thread in the email so that I know what the file is in regards to.

Cheers,
Chad P

Uploading now, just a question about ALAC on windows, is it now supported, these are the files i am having issues with when trying to run through MIK with TAGs, without TAGs it works fine.

Thanks for sending the files over, I'll check them out as soon as I get a chance. ALAC files shouldn't be compatible with the 5.1 version on Windows, but will be once 5.5 is released.
